Psyche Corporation at the Philly Fetish Ball
If any of you are going to the Philly Fetish Ball, be on the lookout for Psyche Corporation. We will be performing on the live steampunk stage Saturday night 11/21/09. Hailing from a future dominated by neurotechnology, dendritic Internet connections and direct dream-downloads, Psyche Corporation is part of an early subliminal marketing initiative for a popular dream-manufacture company of the same name. As a performance, Psyche Corporation is an alloy. One part cyberpunk trip-hop darkwave music, one part robotics exhibition, one part dreamscape art. Drawing much of its aesthetic from steampunk fashions and the neo-vintage movement, Psyche Corp. seeks to combine the best of many worlds to weave its technomythology. http://phillyfetishball.com/ |

LJ Idol Week 4: Current Events
A few years ago I worked at the Library of Congress, one of the daylight-deprived denizens of the sub-basement underneath the Madison Law Library. One of my co-workers, K, was an honest-to-goodness African princess. She was the niece of Liberia's then just-exiled president, Charles Taylor. She was also a single mother, struggling to support herself and her son in the DC area on a menial salary. Her biggest goal in life was to move from a contract worker position to a full government employee so she'd have health insurance. Growing up in Liberia, she told me, was nothing like the life we knew in DC. As a child, her family lived in a walled compound, close enough to the ocean that they could go out swimming every day--under the watchful eyes of their bodyguards. She was at school when a rival tribe/political faction raided her family's home. When she entered their gate, her father and older brother were both laying in the courtyard, dead from execution shots to the head. She was seized by soldiers and forced to kneel, her hands behind her head, in sight of their bodies. She would have been killed too if one of the maids, who happened to be the same tribe as the attacking soldiers, hadn't claimed her as a daughter. K, her younger brother and her mother were smuggled out of Liberia not long afterward. They came to the US in hopes of a better life. Today, K's uncle is on trial by the Special Court of Sierra Leone at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands. He stands accused of 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The details of these accusations include murder, rape, torture, sexual slavery, abduction, enslavement and turning children into soldiers. If he is found guilty, he faces imprisonment in the United Kingdom. No matter what, he is permanently exiled from Liberia. I don't know if Taylor is guilty or not. I do know that K had a very difficult time reconciling the crimes he'd been accused of when he was overthrown with the kind uncle who played with her as a child and protected her when her family was attacked. I haven't spoken with her in some years, not since she got her coveted government job and left the Library behind. I'm sure that no matter where she is, she is concerned for her uncle. No matter how much of a monster he may appear to be, he is also a man with family who love him. Most "monsters" are. This has been my entry for Week 4 of LJ Idol. There was a choice of 5 topics, and I opted for Current Events. It was a challenge to come up with a relevant event that I haven't already discussed here. I hope you enjoyed it, and thank you for reading! |

I, apparently, haven't lost it quite yet.
So, there is this completely innocent question asked in a forum, about who has ever run into someone from their vanilla life at a kink event. I mean, it's a fairly innocuous question, right? So, having had that happen, I responded. I ran into a coworker at a gay leather bar for one of their sash events.
I'm a straight(ish) female and was there with my leather family.
I think he nearly jumped out of his skin. Ironically, we get along much better these days than we did before then.
I'm not quite sure what secret code I inserted into that post, but there must have been some somewhere. Why? The reply I received: From Galliant
Your straight hanging out with gay leather bar. That one still gives me questions... Birds of a feather, they say. ( You know you want to click for my crowning moment of glory. Doooo eeeet. ) |

Snippets of actual conversation...
I was having a conversation with a friend earlier about kids. I was telling him that if I somehow ever magically owned a kid... a little boy in this case, How It Would Be. It went like this: "man, if I had a little boy, I would name him "Prince Palak Paneer" and I would make sure that he had a talking bird and a dog for a sidekick the bird would be called "Porridge Foot Foot" and the dog would be called "Salazar" they would fight for justice in playgrounds and vacant lots I would teach him an ancient kind of stick fighting from the moment he could stand this is why I don't have kids" I was totally into it and excited for a bit, then around the stick fighting part I realized the facial expression that my buddy was probably making on the other end of AIM around that time. Sadly, anyone who knows me fairly well in a conversational setting, knows that I've been excited about this particular idea for a number of years now, and tend to tell the story of Prince Palak Paneer every time 'kids' or 'kid names' comes up. Also, I would dress him like an ancient Persian hero! He would have those pointy / curly toe shoes and everything. This is one of the VERY many reasons that I have a vasectomy, and no children. Don't even get me started on Triple P's kid sister, because that's a tale unto itself. Maybe I should just write a book about these kids instead. I have them totally sorted out in my head. Maybe they should be characters in the 'story world' of the kids book I already started. Also: DAMN I wish I could find the notebook where I started that :/ ANYHOW, Clearly you can see that this whole 'parenting thing' just wouldn't be for me, in addition to the many (very many) moral and social issues that I have with the topic. But to be fair, in my Imagination, both Triple P and his little sister, Double M are always adopted. Sidenote: I whole-heartedly support / champion adoption. |

Peace out and hope to see you there NEXT FRIDAY 9PM-2AM! Hey, it's FREE! Come early for the downtempo, jazz, trip-hop and lounge... Come later for the funk, soul, hip-hop and indie dance...--Tara (Dj Mass Hysteria) Halcyon MySpace | Halcyon Facebook | Halcyon LiveJournal |

Living with people.
I just don't live well with people. Serge and I have understandings about things because we have lived together for about 6 years. I like having another roommate for financial reasons, but this kid is driving me up the fucking wall. - He pisses all over the toilet and gets it on the floor right underneath (Luckily I don't have to worry about sitting on it because it's under the part I'm sitting on. Still, really gross.)
- He washes his clothes at night usually, which is great, it's the best time to wash them actually.. no one else is using the energy. But if our stuff is in the washer, which it sometimes is because I'll start a load before work in the evening, he takes out our wet clothes and puts them in a basket crumpled up. He did this the other day and I didn't realize they smelled so bad until after they were dry. Poor Serge had to wear stinky clothes the entire time at his conference. I brought this up once before, a few weeks ago, saying that even though he doesn't have a set schedule for washing his clothes, he probably has an idea earlier in the day that he's going to be washing them either that night or the next day. You know when you need to wash clothes. So instead of saying "Hey, I'm probably going to wash my clothes tonight, maybe tomorrow, could you please make sure your stuff is out of the washer?" he just leaves them in a basket, wet, in a dark basement.
- He only cleans when I ask him too, even though things are constantly dusty, dirty, cluttered. Everyone tracks dirt inside, even though we keep our shoes by the door. Every time you open a door or a window, dust particles come inside. Therefore, everyone in this house should have the responsibility of sweeping/vacuuming and mopping the floors.
- He leaves his window open when he's not here. Now, if it's hot in your room and you're trying to sleep or hang out in there, I get it. Everyone has different temperature comfort levels. But if you're not even here the entire day, shut your window because all that heat is going out of it. Luckily we don't pay extra for gas, we have a set price fixed in our rent every month. But as someone who actually gives a shit about energy use, it bothers me. When I brought it up to him last week, he straight up lied to me, saying he never leaves it open. Yet every time since then that he leaves, I check and sure enough, it's open. This kind of blatant disrespect is infuriating.
I have tried to be nice about these things, after all we're not the cleanest people either. We're terrible about doing our dishes right after we use them.. but as far as the rest of the house, I'm the only one who actually keeps up with things. Since I'm basically the only one who says something, I'm the bitch of the house, nagging everyone with chores. In the end, I usually just take care of it myself, which is totally not fair, but at least it gets done. Serge doesn't want him to move out, and neither do I really, he's a nice guy, but come on. How can you just be so lazy and disgusting? The pee all over the toilet bothers me the most. That is easy to clean up, just wipe it with toilet paper, even if you don't think you got any on the seat. It may not be sanitized, but it's better than cleaning up a ton of pee all over the place when you clean the bathroom. Sorry for the rant. I'm just sick right now, and have to clean the house because it's gross again. I stepped in pee yesterday by the toilet when I went to use it, and I seriously just cleaned that shit like 5 days ago. Everyone here is busy, no one here likes to clean, but I cannot stand living in a fucking pig sty. Not to mention, being lied to to my face. Current Music: Katatonia - "Liberation" |

Colbert vs Miracle Whip: It's on!
Apparently, Stephen Colbert insulted Miracle Whip on his show the other day. Miracle Whip is fighting back. I love it when companies show that they actually do have a sense of humor. (That ad, btw, appeared in the local paper, and probably in papers in other parts of the country, too.) |
